Italy has a territorial sea covering about 82,000 km2. It has not declared an exclusive economic zone. It has no national MSP, nor is the development of one underway. The EU MSP Directive was transposed into Italian legislation through a Legislative Decree in October 2016.
The national governmental ministry responsible for MSP in Italy is the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. Under the EU Directive on Maritime Spatial Planning Greece will be required to implement a maritime spatial plan by 2021.
Italy, together with Greece, Slovenia, Croatia, participated in the AdriPlan (ADRiatic Ionian maritime spatial PLANing) project (www.adriplan.eu), a transboundary research project supported by the European Commission (DG MARE) from 2013-2015. A “Methodological Handbook on Maritime Spatial Planning in the Adriatic Sea” was published in 2014 as part of the SHAPE (Shaping a Holistic Approach to Protect the Adriatic Environment) pilot project from 2011-2014 and funded by the EU (http://www.shape-ipaproject.eu).
